Second weekend for 'Black Panther' is one of the best ever

Marvel Disney

Marvel Studios' Black Panther rules at the box office, adding yet another feather to Marvel's glorious hat.

Well this past weekend the film did it again, smashing more records and moving T'Challa and company closer to billionaire status.

However, in just the second week alone Black Panther made $108 million at the box office, which makes it the second-biggest second weekend gross of all time (The Force Awakens is number one at $149m).

The film also holds the records for, according to Forbes, the second biggest comic book superhero opening weekend (after The Avengers), the second biggest Sunday gross (after The Force Awakens) and fifth biggest opening weekend of all time (after Star Wars: The Force Awakens, The Last Jedi, Jurassic World and The Avengers in descending order).

With a 97% score review on Rotten Tomatoes and fans flocking to see it multiple times, expect Black Panther to crush the billion dollar mark shortly and to not slow down anytime soon.

Directed by John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein, the story follows a couple whose regular game night with friends suddenly turns into a real-life murder mystery. The film still has much more to make as it will premiere in the Japanese market on March 1st before heading to China on March 9th.

Annihilation came in fourth behind Sony holdover Peter Rabbit, which took in $12.5 million in its third weekend for a domestic total of $71.2 million. Jennifer Jason Leigh, Tessa Thompson, Gina Rodriguez and Tuva Novotny co-star.

YA film adaptation Every Day, directed by Michael Sucsy and the first release from MGM's relaunched Orion Pictures, placed No. 9 with $3 million from 1,625 cinemas. The pic received a B+ CinemaScore. Updated with revised grosses.
