Golden moments are made of this at the Winter Olympics

Record-setting French skaters settle for silver

Canadian figure skaters Tessa Virtue and Scott Moir are in line for the ice dance gold while biathlon star Martin Fourcade eyes a third title on Tuesday, when five gold medals are awarded, reported AFP.

Tessa Virtue and Scott Moir, who trained at the club as children and lived in Waterloo for a period of time, won a gold medal in the ice dance competition at the Olympics in Pyeongchang, South Korea.

Fans at the Gangneung Ice Arena roared during their steamy skate to music from "Moulin Rouge" and they were all smiles as they took what will likely be the final bows of their illustrious career.

Marie-France Dubreuil and Patrice Lauzon never experienced what it felt like to stand on an Olympic podium when the Canadian ice dancers made their two trips to the Winter Games. "We knew that regardless of what the result was going to be we did everything that we could and have no regrets".

"We are so grateful to our team for having prepared us for this". Their routines have set the internet aflame with fevered speculation about whether they are in fact a real couple, increasing the general interest in ice dance as a sport (if only for an Olympics).

"Amazing", said Virtue. "It was a special moment to come out last".

Muramoto said, "I think it is the most composed we have been this season and were able to nail all our elements so I am really satisfied".

Weeknights spent watching Jeopardy, occasional ballroom dancing and private 10-year anniversary skates - that'll be the future for Tessa Virtue and Scott Moir, they joke, after the golden moment Monday that closed out their on-ice story, two decades in the making. It helps them focus, they've said.

But what it really represents is the culmination of the greatest comeback in figure skating history. They carried the Maple Leaf flag into the opening ceremony, and their rock-inspired Latin short dance broke their own world record the previous day.

"Virtue/Moir - their skate will be an iconic Olympic skating moment", tweeted skating legend Dick Button, the men's Olympic gold medallist in 1948 and '52. American siblings Alex and Maia Shibutani took home the bronze.

Teammates Kaitlyn Weaver and Andrew Poje placed seventh, one spot ahead of fellow Canadians Piper Gilles and Paul Poirier.

They retired for two years after that disappointment, content with their place in history, only to decide a couple years ago to make one more run at Olympic glory.

Virtue and Moir had been tied with Russia's Evgeni Plushenko and Sweden's Gillis Grafstrom for most medals among figure skaters.

Virtue and Moir had taken a two-year break from competition after the Sochi Games, where they were beaten by rivals and training partners Meryl Davis and Charlie White of the USA.

Papadakis said Tuesday's performance had, made their Olympic debut special. "The gold medal is the cherry on the cake".

A Slovenian hockey player has become the third athlete to test positive for doping at the Pyeongchang Olympics. It was for each other, we skated with each other in mind the whole way and we skated with our hearts. The Finns cemented the meeting with the Canadians by downing South Korea 5-2 on Tuesday in a qualification-round match.

The Vancouver 2010 champions looked destined for silver after French rivals Gabriella Papadakis and Guillaume Cizeron appeared to have stolen the show, breaking their own free dance and combined score mark.
