Flu killed 22 children last week in US

The number of people with influenza-like illness this year remained stable from last week a first for this deadly flu season

The CDC admits that vaccine effectiveness estimates against influenza A (H3N2) viruses have been lower than estimates against influenza A (H1N1) and influenza B viruses for several years.

A study published last year by researchers at the CDC, found that "providing paid sick leave to workers who lack it might help decrease the number of workdays lost due to flu and similar illnesses by almost 4 to 11 million per year", resulting in an overall cost savings of $1 billion to $2 billion dollars.

Q: Is it too late to get my daughter a flu shot?

This year's flu shot is offering limited protection against the most prevalent strain of the virus circulating during this season's flu epidemic, according to preliminary reports from the Centers for Disease Control (CDC). "However, the virus has mutated between the time they picked the strain, and the time they manufactured the vaccine".

However, new research from the University of Chicago and Harvard University has shown that flu vaccine's effectiveness may depend more on what flu strains you've been exposed to over your whole life than on what is in the shot. The influenza virus' activity is twice as high this time of year than it has been in prior years. Sixty-three children have already died from influenza this season.

Between classes, clubs and sports, the last thing any college student needs is to be knocked out for two weeks from the flu.

"We are pretty confident this will be better protection", he said.

FDA Commissioner Scott Gottlieb, M.D.in his statement on the the efficacy of the 2017-2018 influenza vaccine states, "This year much of the illness has been caused by one strain of influenza A called H3N2, with another strain of influenza A called H1N1 and strains of influenza B contributing to lesser extents". Many pharmacies also offer flu vaccine to kids.

Have you, or someone you know, gotten sick with the flu?

Traditional rapid flu tests are still the most common type of test.

He says this year there's been a significant uptick in the number of baby boomers - those in their 50s and 60s who are being hit harder than normal, most likely because of the strain of the virus this year - one they haven't seen in their lifetime with a chance to build up immunity to it. These include providing some manufacturers with the seed viruses used for further vaccine manufacture and the critical potency reagents needed to ensure that influenza vaccines made by one manufacturer are similar to those made by another.

These vaccines grew in cells, not eggs.

There are differences in symptoms that can help differentiate between the flu and a cold. But this season, new questions arose about the widely adopted egg-based vaccine production process, which was suspected to have reduced the shots' effectiveness, according to a recent New England Journal of Medicine commentary.
