Doug Martin released by Tampa Bay Buccaneers

What a weird career it's been for Doug Martin

The Bucs will save all $6.75 million on Martin's deal for 2018, according to Spotrac. After back-to-back sup-par seasons in 2013 and 2014, Martin bounced back with 1,402 yards in 2015, and earned Pro Bowl honors yet again.

Martin may stick on the free agent market for a while, and it is possible he may not find a team until the preseason, if he does at all. As a result of his resurgence, Martin inked a five-year, $35.75 million extension with the Bucs.

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers parted ways with former first round pick Doug Martin on Tuesday afternoon. That negated future guaranteed money from the contract, so releasing him won't have salary cap ramifications.

The Bucs selected Martin in the first round of the 2012 NFL Draft.

He ran for 1,454 yards as a rookie, exploding on the scene out of Boise State and looking like a future franchise back.

Obviously there's talent, but it's going to be hard for a team to convince itself that signing the 29-year-old running back is worth it.

Martin served three games of his suspension at the start of the 2017 season and didn't have a great campaign upon his return. Charles Sims and Jacquizz Rodgers have turned up in some moments as good complements to Martin, but only Rodgers is under contract in 2018. He failed to rush for less than 500 yards in 4 of the last 5 years. Peyton Barber was the team's leading rushing last season with 423 rushing yards on 3.9 yards per carry.
