Cherica Adams, Rae Carruth's Girlfriend: 5 Fast Facts

Saundra Adams reacts to a jailhouse letter from Rae Carruth

The former National Football League wide receiver was found guilty for conspiring to murder his pregnant girlfriend, Cherica Adams in 1999. A star receiver at Colorado, Carruth was Carolina's first-round pick in the 1997 NFL Draft, but his pro career ended abruptly after he was charged and convicted for conspiracy to commit murder in 2001. She was driving a BMW along Rea Road in southeast Charlotte when she was shot four times by someone Carruth hired to pull the trigger.

Carruth sent a 15 page letter addressed to Adams' mother to our news partner, WBTV.

In an interview with the Charlotte Observer Monday, Adams said that while she has "forgiven" Carruth he will never get custody of her grandson.

Carruth said in the same interview that he wants to have custody of his son, who is now 18 years old and has been raised by his maternal grandmother from birth.

From a prison phone, Carruth told WBTV that he let his son down "as he came into this world and the only way that I can make that right and the only way I can reconcile my relationship with my son is to be there for him".

Carruth was sentenced to almost 19 years in prison.

"I feel like if I did it in the open, it would put an end to the lies".

"Chancellor will be raised either by me or, after I'm gone, by someone else who loves him and who knows him", she said. His mother, Adams, later died. I feel responsible for everything that happened. "That being said, of course when that time comes, I would like to be in a position to be seriously considered as a viable option".

Turkey and U.S. to step back from brink over Syria
Turkey has said previously the US did not honor previous pledges to withdraw Kurdish fighters east across the Euphrates river. The US and Turkey, whose forces are at loggerheads in northern Syria, have agreed to try to defuse the crisis.

Saundra Adams has said that she and Chancellor will be there when Carruth is released from prison in October.

"I'm apologizing for the loss of her daughter". He can have some supervised visitation with his son - I am open to that. "I could have done a better job of keeping Cherica and Chancellor out of harm's way".

Carruth had not done an interview since 2001, when he spoke to CNN.

His impending release appears to have galvanized the sentimental side of him, as he appears to be ready to break his longtime silence on his crimes. And I just want her to know that truly I am sorry for everything, .

"If I could change anything, I'd change the whole situation. I feel like he might not ever have his mother in his life but he could still have me and I could still make a difference and I don't think that's anyone's responsibility when I'm still here".

"When I first got incarcerated I would ask myself how did this happen?" he said. I'm glad to hear of the repentance and of his relationship with God.

Carruth wrote the letter to "force the media and public alike" to start challenging Adams "on the truthfulness of the statements" that she has made about him, "claims of forgiveness" and her "insincerity" concerning Chancellor and Carruth "having a relationship going forward".
