Turkey and U.S. to step back from brink over Syria

Ex-HDP leader blasts 'unfair trial' in court appearance

While relations between Washington and its main Muslim ally in North Atlantic Treaty Organisation have been strained by a number of issues, Turkey has been particularly infuriated by USA support for the Syrian Kurdish YPG militia, which it sees as terrorists.

Turkish police used tear gas on anti-US demonstrators in Ankara who were protesting in the wake of U.S. Secretary of State Rex Tillerson's visit to the country.

The official said the United States was considering the proposal, which was made to the U.S. secretary of state, Rex Tillerson, during his visit to Ankara. "We're going to work through the issues that are causing difficulties for us and we're going to resolve them", Tillerson told a news conference after a meeting with Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu.

"With the will that we put forward as of yesterday, we have taken an important turn in terms of normalizing our relations".

Turkey considers the fighters a terrorist group and an extension of a Kurdish insurgency in Turkey and views the US military support for the Kurds in Syria as a top security threat.

Washington has warned that Turkey's operation against the People's Protection Units (YPG) Kurdish militia in the Afrin region of Syria risks distracting from the fight against jihadists. We're going to lock arms.

Russian Federation targeting 2018 elections, U.S. intelligence chiefs say
The Senate Intelligence Committee is conducting one of the three main congressional investigations into the Russian Federation issue.

"They have been there consistently for two or three years - nearly for the whole period that the Washington-led coalition has worked in Syria and all this time the United States special forces and other units are in Syria on the ground, illegally, without any invitation from Damascus, or without any mandate of the UN Security Council", he said.

Turkey has said previously the US did not honor previous pledges to withdraw Kurdish fighters east across the Euphrates river.

Turkey has said Kurdish fighters have travelled through Manbij to re-inforce Afrin, the Syrian Kurdish canton to the west of Aleppo invaded by Turkish troops in January.

Even amid the effort to mend fences, Tillerson took time to call out Turkey on issues of concern. The U.S. considers them the most effective fighting force in the battle to defeat IS in Syria, and this week offered a budget plan that would send them the bulk of $550 million in new assistance.

The US and Turkey, whose forces are at loggerheads in northern Syria, have agreed to try to defuse the crisis.

Turkey sees the YPG as a terrorist organization and launched a military operation in Syria in response to Kurdish territorial gains. This US policy also strengthens Russian allies' hands, particularly the Assad regime and Iran.Lastly, but by no means least, the lack of coherence between the White House and the US military, and the unfulfilled pledges made to Turkey, have led to a severe decline in the image of the US as an ally in the eyes of Turkish politicians and the public.
