United Nations slams Israel for violating Palestinian teen's rights

Trial begins for Palestinian accused of assaulting Israeli soldiers

More than two dozen prominent US Black artists and public figures are speaking out in support of Ahed Tamimi, as the teenager's trial began in an Israeli military court. She was denied bail at her hearing last month, with the prosecution arguing that she was risky and posed a risk of absconding.

The teenager, just 16 at the time of the incident, was arrested in December after a video of her assaulting two soldiers outside of her home surfaced online and went viral.

"The minor (Tamimi) and her parents wanted the doors open and in this case, the court need not decide what is best for her".

The Palestinian girl was seen raising her hand in a victory sign as she walked into the courtroom with chains, whispering to her family members.

On Tuesday, Ahed was brought before the Ofer military court in the occupied West Bank.

Rights groups such as Amnesty International have pointed out that under the UN's Convention on the Rights of the Child, of which Israel is a state party, the "arrest, detention or imprisonment of a child must be used only as a measure of last resort and for the shortest appropriate period of time".

Ahed Tamimi, 17, has drawn worldwide attention following her arrest after the December 15 confrontation with an Israeli officer and a soldier outside her West Bank home of Nabi Saleh.

Like many Palestinians in the occupied West Bank, Ms Tamimi also faces a military trial - which convict almost 100 per cent of alleged Palestinian offenders. Petra Marquardt-Bigman is a German-Israeli researcher wrote a scathing op-ed in the Haaretz, describing the Tamimi family as espousing a "seething Jew-hatred and the enthusiastic support for terrorism".

"The court chose to close doors because they said they don't think it's good for Ahed", said defense lawyer Gaby Lasky. The latest in the extended family to die was a 17-year-old distant cousin, who was the first Palestinian to die in clashes with Israeli forces this year.

Qaraqe said prisoners would instruct their lawyers not to engage with the courts in any way from February 15 onward. She was arrested, and now faces charges of aggravated assault, obstructing the work of soldiers, and incitement.

The 17-year-old girl was arrested on December 19 and must now respond to the judicial process, while remaining in jail, for which United Nations experts demand respect to the rules of global law and demand her freedom.

"None of the facts of this case would appear to justify her ongoing detention prior to her trial, particularly given the concerns expressed by the Committee on the Rights of the Child about the use of pre-trial detention and detention on remand", Lynk added. The incident left him in a coma, his family said, and he had part of his skull removed.

The scuffle took place amid clashes and protests against US President Donald Trump's controversial recognition of Jerusalem as Israel 's capital.

An indictment also was filed against Nariman Tamimi, Ahed's mother, who uploaded the video to Facebook.

Ahed's lawyer accuses the military of breaking the United Nations convention on the rights of a child during her nighttime arrest and interrogation, during which she says Ahed was threatened.

"The Israeli military supposes by arresting Ahed Tamimi they can silence their activism", said Fadi Quran, a senior campaigner with the activist group Avaaz.

The video stirred complaints in Israel that the soldiers had been humiliated. Diplomats from the European Union and several European countries, including Germany and the Netherlands, attended Tuesday's hearing as observers before they were kicked out along with journalists.
