How Apple plans to debug, revamp iPhone software

Apple releases Battery Health tool for iPhones

In addition to prioritizing quality over quantity, so insiders say, the engineers will also have greater flexibility to push back the release of features that still need time to ideal. At Apple, all new features are tied to a big release in the fall, when Apple rolls out its splashiest new software, and a more modest update in the spring. When Apple was a smaller company with fewer engineers, customers and devices to manage, says one person familiar with the company. It's no wonder that iPhone and iPad owners aren't updating their software as quickly as they used to - just 65 percent of iOS users have updated to iOS 11, according to Apple's developer website. For example, last year's release didn't initially include previously touted features that would let consumers send money via or synchronise full text message histories among Apple devices.

The decision comes after criticism over the launch of some features launched with bugs (the weird autocorrect bug, for instance), while others (Apple Pay Cash, iMessage in the Cloud) were delayed well into the launch cycle.

The decision to formalize the process and give engineers more time to ideal software is a major cultural shift. Instead of having thousands of engineers rushing to complete their work by September, teams will have up to two years to complete a release.

While Forces Expected Strike In Kashmir, Fidayeen Struck Jammu Camp
Former J&K chief minister Farooq Abdullah said that Pakistan had to stop terrorism and linked most incidents to Pakistan. In the initial attack, Subedar Madan Lal Chowdhry, his daughter Neha, and Lance Naik Bhadur Singh were injured.

The first release of the new development strategy is highly expected to arrive in the fall of this year.

Guttman's report largely focuses on what iOS 12 won't bring with it, though, adding weight to earlier rumours that Apple is planning to nix significant updates to iOS this year in favour of focusing on stability and security. Internally code-named "Peace", it will likely be called. Bloomberg's report suggests Apple teams will now have similar flexibility, although it's unclear if app updates will be separated from iOS. Some major new capabilities are still planned though, including an all-new app model which will allow iOS apps to run on the Mac desktop. It may also integrate Animojis into FaceTime, letting people put virtual faces over themselves during video calls. They're only available on the iPhone X right now as the handset has the required Face ID camera. This includes a feature which would have made it possible to run multiple windows in one app with users being able to click between them like tabs in a web browser. Still expected this year is a redesign of the Stock app and an updated version of Do Not Disturb that gives users more options for automatically rejecting phone calls or silencing notifications. New features for the Apple Pencil and a toggle in the email app to mute notifications for a thread have been pushed back.

In the past, "Apple's smaller scale helped it build better-quality software than the rest of the market", says Steven Troughton-Smith, a veteran app developer. There are various other upgrades to follow.
