South African President on 48 hours' Ultimatum to quit

Would changing the way South Africans elect their leaders save the ANC from itself

An opposition-backed motion of no confidence has been scheduled for February 22, but its sponsors want the vote to be moved up to this week.

ANC President, Cyril Ramaphosa, acknowledged on Sunday that the issue was causing "disunity and discord".

Ramaphosa narrowly defeated Zuma's ex-wife and preferred successor, Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma, in the leadership vote, forcing him to tread carefully in handling Zuma for fear of deepening the rifts in the party a year ahead of an election.

"I was asking (in the meeting with ANC leadership) what have I done?"

"It's likely, depending on the availability of Chief Justice, we can probably elect a new President".

Sources said they also argued that "everyone in the movement did not agree with a recall".

Ramaphosa has been calling for Zuma's resignation since December when the former became deputy president of the ANC.

It was obvious on Tuesday that Zuma was reluctant to go.

The ANC's national executive committee has chose to recall President Jacob Zuma as head of state‚ with no deal and an ultimatum.

Martin Schulz resigns as leader of Germany's Social Democrats
Handing over the leadership of the SPD may not be as simple as many in the party would like as resistance to Nahles is growing. In a cartoon published on Tuesday, the Sueddeutsche Zeitung daily showed Nahles with a whip riding an SPD snail.

Despite Magashule saying that "the decision is now final", he revealed that Zuma told him that he "did not believe the NEC has the right" to make such a ruling.

One case relates to 783 payments he allegedly received linked to an arms deal before he came to power. An elite police unit entered the compound of the Gupta family, which has been accused of using its connections to the president to influence Cabinet appointments and win state contracts.

State broadcaster SABC reported on Monday that Mr Zuma, 75, had agreed to step down as head of state, with correspondent Tshepo Ikaneng citing "authoritative sources".

Magashule did not give a deadline or transition period for Zuma to resign.

In the past, the ANC had called it the "worst form of betrayal" of the party if its MPs voted with the opposition. Under his rule, economic growth slowed down and unemployment reached record low levels.

Zuma, who took office in 2009, has been embroiled in corruption scandals throughout most of his two terms.

Zuma has been discredited by a series of scandals, although he denies wrongdoing.

In local polls in 2016, the ANC recorded its worst electoral result since coming to power with Mandela at the helm in 1994 when white-minority rule fell.

Ramaphosa, the deputy president, must revive the economy and crack down on what he has admitted is rampant government corruption if he is to boost the party's tarnished reputation before an uphill election battle next year.
