Qualcomm's Snapdragon X24 LTE modem trounces fibre broadband speeds

Qualcomm's new X24 LTE modem can reach a ridiculously fast 2 gbps

In the meantime, Qualcomm's freshly announced X24 LTE modem will support 2 gigabit-per-second speeds, the first of its kind to do so.

Qualcomm created a live demonstration of the 5G NR spectrum sharing - a technology that will enable higher levels of mobile broadband performance to unlicensed and shared spectrum, as well as play an important role in extending 5G into new types of deployments such as private networks for industrial IoT.

It supports up to 7x carrier aggregation in the downlink, as well as 4×4 MIMO on up to five aggregated LTE carriers, for a total of up to 20 concurrent spatial LTE streams. The X24 LTE will be an upgrade over X20 LTE modem found on company's flagship Snapdragon 845 mobile platform.

Qualcomm, the world's largest mobile chipmaker, unveiled a new ingredient for future phones that will help devices zip through photo uploads and video streaming at up to double the speed of today's LTE capabilities - without needing a certified 5G phone.

Why you should totally wait to buy Apple's new HomePod
The claims are extensive, and iTWire can report when hearing the three devices in one room there is truly no comparison. If you are looking for a smart speaker, Alexa is ahead of the race with Google Home close behind.

Qualcomm says the new X24 LTE modem can reach theoretical speeds of 2Gbps, wherever supported by carries, which is a significant improvement over theoretical speeds of 1.2Gbps achieved by X20 LTE modem. The first commercial devices equipped with the Snapdragon X24 are expected by the end of the year. There are many other factors that determine network speeds other than the modem.

The latest x50 modem will operate at around 6 GHz frequency and will be able to maintain a stable 4G network and also connect to the 5G network. X24-based phones that also have 5G modems will, ideally, smoothly ramp up and down between fast LTE and early 5G networks without experiencing the sort of "speed cliff" you feel when you drop from 4G LTE to EDGE, for instance. The Snapdragon X24 LTE modem will be featured in a live demonstration at Mobile World Congress Barcelona in conjunction with Ericsson, Telstra and NETGEAR. It's meant to give us a glimpse of the kind of mobile broadband we can expect with the arrival of 5G in 2019. Additional system capacity improvements are made possible through support of Full Dimension Multi-Input Multi-Output (FD-MIMO), a Massive MIMO technology that is foundational to future 5G NR networks.

Original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) can offer better mobile experiences such as 360-degree video, connected cloud computing, more entertainment and instant apps.

In the uplink, the X24 supports Category 20 upload speeds, 3x20MHz CA and up to 256 QAM encoding. But the fact that Qualcomm has announced this modem at all shows that it believes there's going to be demand for an advanced LTE solution in smartphones next year that does not include 5G connectivity, and that seems like a reasonable prediction to me.
