Kim Jong Un invites South Korean president for talks in the North

'Never-before-seen' MYSTERY missiles spotted during North Korea's military parade

The past year has been particularly acrimonious as the North has accelerated its nuclear weapons development and test launches of missiles that are now believed to be able to reach most or all of the United States, South Korea's most important ally.

For hours Saturday, South Korean media was abuzz over the contents of a mysterious blue folder carried by the sister of North Korean dictator Kim Jong Un to her lunch date with South Korean President Moon Jae-in.

US Vice President Mike Pence, who was seated next to Moon, stared ahead as the ceremony unfolded.

South Korean President Moon Jae In has rejected a request by Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe to swiftly resume the country's joint military drills with the United States, his office said Saturday.

Kim Yong Nam and Kim Yo Jong were the first individuals mentioned in its report on the opening ceremony, saying that they took their places on the platform at the event.

But away from the spotlight, these two unwanted guests, men dressed as North Korea supreme leader and the USA president, were escorted away from the premises.

Athletes from both nations entered Pyeongchang Stadium as a unified team sharing a flag for Friday's opening ceremony.

"President Moon said that US-North Korea talks should be held in the near future to improve inter-Korean relations, and asked the North to take a proactive approach to the matter", Kim Eui-kyeom said.

The presence of Kim Yo Jong as part of the delegation to the Olympics led to speculation that she might have been sent because, as a close relative of the North Korean leader, she would be in a position to deliver a personal message to Moon.

She is the first immediate family member of North Korea's founder Kim Il Sung to ever set foot in the South.

Saturday's meeting was the first time a South Korean president hosted North Korean officials at the Blue House since 2007.

"South Korea has some hard homework to solve regarding some countries", Moon told the gathering of some 200 VIPs at the reception before Pence arrived.

On his way to Asia earlier this week, the United States vice president told reporters he was not seeking direct talks with North Korean officials, "but we'll see what happens".

The summit culminated in an eight-point agreement, built on the 2000 declaration.

The North's official Korean Central News Agency also referred to Moon as president.

The resilient Koreans refused to cave in till the last minute of the game, but their poor defense and inexperience cost them too much.

Short-track speed skating makes its Pyeongchang debut with South Korea's best hope for a haul of gold medals, Choi Min-jeong, starting her campaign for a 500m qualifiers. Coach Sarah Murray played three North Korean forwards as required in the deal that created the team; she had to scratch three of her South Korean players.

Pyongyang conducted its largest nuclear test past year and said it had developed a missile capable of carrying a warhead to the United States.

Organising committee spokeswoman Nancy Park said the defence ministry and a cyber security team were investigating the outage that occurred Friday night.
