South Carolina Amtrak crash: Deaths, scores injured after trains collide

Amtrak engineer killed in train crash was 'a loving father'

An Amtrak train traveling in SC collided with a CSX freight train on Sunday, killing two people and injuring at least 70. And 116 people were taken to four hospitals, according to the governor. The lead engine and a few passenger cars came off the tracks on Amtrak 91, which was traveling from NY to Miami.

Lexington County sheriff Jay Koon said his officers arrived on the scene nearly immediately after the crash occurred, along with county emergency response crews who transported more than 100 people to local hospitals. Authorities said they haven't determined if both trains were moving or if the Amtrak train was diverted on to a side track.

A shelter and reception site were set up by the American Red Cross at nearby Pine Ridge Middle School. The lead engine and a few passenger cars derailed.

Derrec Becker of the South Carolina Emergency Management Division said injuries reported include minor cuts as well as broken bones, and he said all passengers had been removed from the train.

Among the passengers on the train was Philadelphia man Derek Pettaway, who posted on social media to tell his friends and family he was safe.

An Eastern Carolina school superintendent and his family were among the survivors on that Amtrak train that crashed in SC.

Hospital officials said most of those injured have already been discharged.

It was the second major crash for the railroad in less than a week.

The National Transportation Safety Board says it will conduct an investigation into the collision.

Two deaths were confirmed by Lexington County Coroner Margaret Fisher.

The NTSB and other officials continue to investigate and work through the details of an Amtrak train crash in Cayce Sunday.
