Asian stocks also plunged as panicked investors fret over rising U.S. borrowing costs and cash in profits after months of market euphoria. Benchmark Nifty fell 0.87% to 10,666.55, while Sensex closed 309.59 points today. Here is how it all started.

According to BSE data, market capitalisation of all listed BSE companies stood at Rs142 trillion on Tuesday, which was lower than Rs155 trillion as on 30 January. "If this kind of market fall continues then the inflows may fall by half", said a senior equity fund manager from a private fund house on condition of anonymity.

Dow Jones, the benchmark share index in the U.S., lost 1,175 points on Monday - nearly 400 points more than the last biggest decline in a single day during the financial crisis of 2008. It plunged by over 300 points or 3.00 per cent.

Major losers in the 30-share index were Housing Development Finance Corporation (3.86%), Larsen & Toubro (3.49%), Kotak Mahindra Bank (2.66%), Bajaj Auto (2.12%), Adani Ports and Special Economic Zone (2.08%), and Oil & Natural Gas Corporation (1.84%).

The trigger for the sell-off was a sharp rise in USA bond yields following Friday's data that showed U.S. wages increasing at the fastest pace since 2009, raising the alarm about higher inflation and with it potentially higher interest rates.

Out of 2,044 stocks traded on the NSE, 436 advanced, 1,272declined and 336 remained unchanged today.

The foreign fund selling is taking a toll on the strength of the Indian currency, too, with the rupee now at 64.07 a dollar compared with 63.59 the day before the Budget. The decline in percentage terms - 4.6% - was the biggest since August 2011, during the Eurozone sovereign debt crisis. Japan's Nikkei fell 4.73%, Hong Kong's Hang Seng lost 5.12%, while Shanghai Composite Index shed 3.35%. Among the Asian markets, Nikkei in Japan closed 2.6% lower while in late session FTSE in United Kingdom was down over 1%.
