Iranian police have reportedly arrested 29 women for protesting against the country's compulsory hijab law, according to CNN.

The women have been accused of public order offences and referred to the state persecutor's office.

IRANIAN PRESIDENT HASSAN ROUHANI, taking a swipe at hardliners who back the compulsory hijab and other religious rules.

"It's evident by the fact that the morality police are on constant patrol of the streets of major cities like Tehran", Dagres told Al Jazeera.

Judicial authorities in Iran are cracking down on women protesting against obligatory wearing of headscarves known as hijabs.

Recent anti-hijab rallies were inspired by a lone female demonstrator who, while standing in central Tehran, waved her white headscarf on a stick.

Citing the Teheran police, the hardline Tasnim news agency said last Friday that in recent days, "29 people who were deceived by the propaganda of a campaign named White Wednesdays to remove their hijab were arrested by police". "But now ... I think the government of Iran, they have the fear of these fearless women", founder Masih Alinejad CBC Radio on Wednesday.

The hijab-waving demonstration is part of a campaign started by exiled Iranian journalist Misah Alinejad, who one year ago encouraged women to post images and videos of themselves on social media with the hashtag #whitewednesdays.

They took testimony from Russian whistleblower Grigory Rodchenkov and World Anti-Doping Agency investigator Richard McLaren, who did not attend in person.

Activist Masoum Komi launched a social media campaign against the law and the women who have been arrested responded by removing their scarves.

Women showing their hair in public can be jailed for up to two months or fined $25.

The Iranian regime, of course, is conspiracy theories that the anti-hijab movement is the work of foreign agitators seeking to undermine the Islamic Republic.

According to the Guardian, Iranian officials accused Alinejad, who works for the U.S. government-funded media organ Voice of America, of receiving money from foreign governments to fund her campaign.

"We imposed restrictions on women and put them under unnecessary restrains".

"The girl of Enghelab Street has been released", human rights lawyer Nasrin Sotoudeh wrote in a post on her Facebook page on January 28.

Hijab has a complicated history in Iran.
