USA's missile defense system test fails

Raytheon's SM-3 Block IIA is developed and manufactured at Redstone Arsenal

A US official says a missile interceptor failed to hit its target in a test conducted in Hawaii on Wednesday.

The agency, which manages US missile defense systems, issued a statement saying the interceptor was launched from the Pacific Missile Range Facility at Kauai, Hawaii.

Another SM-3 Block test in June failed after the interceptor missile's self-destruct mechanism was accidentally triggered by a member of military personnel, although there was a successful test in early 2017.

During the tests, the SM-3 Block IIA missile launched from the test site did not strike another missile fired from the aircraft.

This time, however, the Pentagon isn't even acknowledging the test took place.

Pyongyang has test-fired ballistic missiles on lofted trajectories into the sea around Japan multiple times, and officials said it would be very hard for Japan's current anti-missile defense systems to shoot them down if they were to threaten the country's territory.

President Trump to deliver his first State of the Union address
While his immediate audience will be the packed chamber, the speech will be beamed live on TV channels across the country. Judy Chu had been on the speakers list but is attending Trump's State of the Union address , a spokesman confirmed.

For now, the missile is used to target intermediate-range missiles from adversaries and is a key element of U.S. missile defenses in the Pacific region. In the last year, the United States has experienced two missile interceptor test failures including the one on Wednesday while the last one was in June last year.

"But we learn something all the time with these tests". It is part of the Aegis Ballistic Missile Defense System, which is being co-developed by the US and Japan as threats from North Korea escalate.

A similar test conducted in July ended in failure as well, though the Department of Defense reported that it was the result of human error, rather than an issue with the system. The SM-3 IIA will have to be tested again at Kauai before that happens.

In the past year, the authoritarian country has increased its missile launch tests, with some missiles flying over the territory of Japan.

The test has been said by defense analysts and weapon systems analysts to be synonymous with an attempting to hit one bullet using another bullet. The false warning, which comes amid continued tensions with North Korea, set off panic on the islands.
