Go Red for Women Day: Heart disease awareness

National Wear Red Day is hosted by Go Red for Woman, an organization founded by the American Heart Association.

That's more than all cancers combined.

February is American Heart Month and today, February 2, is National Wear Red Day. Did you know that 80 percent of heart disease in women is preventable through diet, exercise and knowing your key health numbers?

Kris Zeller, co-chair of the 2018 Quad Cities Heart Ball joined FOX 18's Brittany Price in studio to explain how people can get involved and how this day of awareness can make a difference. Heart disease is often generally associated with men, but cardiovascular disease is the number one killer of women.

"So you may go up to them and ask them a question, why are you wearing red, what's going on today?"

Vaping is safer than cigarettes
There are 18 million e-cigarette smokers in the United States - 16% of these are high school students according to the research . While tobacco smoke contains a host of unsafe chemicals, e-cig liquid consists only of nicotine and relatively harmless solvents.

Dr. Jerome Pierson setting aside a day to wear red is important because it starts a conversation.

The celebration of "Wear Red Day" continued later on where Unity Point Health St. Lukes also had Mayor Bob Scott for their own reading of the Proclamation.

If you're a woman, The American Heart Association says, you should know your Total Cholesterol, HDL (good) Cholesterol, Blood Pressure, Blood Sugar, and Body Mass Index (BMI).
