Premier says Alberta suspending electricity purchase talks with BC

Alberta Premier Rachel Notley has appealed to Ottawa for help in the pipeline battle with B.C. and she is likely to get

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau sought to bridge the divide between Alberta and British Columbia on Friday with a vow that climate change and spill protection programs won't go ahead unless the Kinder Morgan pipeline expansion is built.

What legitimate options does Alberta have?

"We need this pipeline and we're going to move forward with it responsibly like I committed to".

Constitutional Ottawa has jurisdiction over federal infrastructure projects like pipelines, but B.C. has a strong legal standing over environmental threats within its borders, Eric Adams, an associate professor in the faculty of law at the University of Alberta specializing in constitutional law, was reported to state.

Here's the problem: That promise has no credibility because there have been zero consequences for undermining it, as B.C.'s NDP/Green government keeps doing.

As Alberta moves to phase out coal power by 2030, electricity prices in Alberta are likely to rise, and refusing to buy hydro power from B.C. will drive up the price further, he said.

He added that without Trans Mountain, B.C. would need to get tankers to the Port of Burnaby, which he says would be even more unsafe. In the meantime, she hopes the federal government will intervene.

Andre Drummond makes All-Star team as injury replacement
Drummond is averaging 14.7 points and a league-leading 15.1 rebounds to go with a career-high 3.8 assists this season. But it's nice to see his personality coming out, even if he's using an emoji to do so.

Notley said Thursday the government is looking at a legal strategy, but didn't elaborate. "I'm surprised with the reaction we're getting from Alberta".

The Constitution's authors "didn't think the environment was a thing" in 1867, and the document is silent on whose job it is to protect it, he said. "The Government of Alberta will not - we can not - let this unconstitutional attack on jobs and working people stand".

Van Enter added the Trans Mountain project had undergone a three-year regulatory process and science and safety review and urged other governments and interest groups to join the PCA in opposing the B.C. government decision. Canada's pipeline disaster is deteriorating into a national unity crisis in addition to a financial one, because Canada's land-locked oil is deeply discounted, resulting in lost revenue, taxes and royalties in the tens of millions of dollars a day. It is something the industry doesn't want and something that would actually hurt Albertans.

It might also run afoul of the New West Partnership, which says government regulations can't impair trade between western provinces.

The Alberta government could potentially develop a campaign to encourage residents to spend that money in Banff or Drumheller instead.

"Our economies, the economies of the two provinces are closely linked".

At least one Alberta restaurant has already chose to take B.C. wines off its menu.
