Militants assault Afghan workplaces of kids's NGO, killing 4

At least 40 dead following suicide bombing in Kabul

The remaining attacker was taken into custody by local security forces, said Defense Ministry spokesman Dawlat Waziri.

Five militants were involved, said the spokesman.

He also said that four people have been arrested in connection with Saturday's ambulance attack.

USA officials have said that the new strategy is putting pressure on the Taliban but with the attacks showing no sign of abating there's a growing sense of helpless anger among Afghans.

It comes days after the deadliest bombing for months hit Kabul when Taliban militants in an ambulance packed with explosives killed at least 100 people.

Tolo News and Reuters reported that explosions and gunfire could be heard near the entrance of the military academy early in the attack, which began around 5 a.m.

A spokesperson for the Afghan president confirmed the incident took place, adding that none of the attackers were able to breach the compound's first gate. He said the "Taliban must choose between Islam and terrorism". Named after Mohammed Fahim, the country's late vice-president and a military commander of the Northern Alliance that fought the Taliban, the academy was inaugurated in 2013 after British forces oversaw building the officers' school and its training program.

Pakistan today strongly condemned the Islamic State attack at a military academy in Kabul and called for concerted efforts and cooperation among all countries to eradicate the scourge of terrorism in Afghanistan. He said four suspects had been arrested. One military official said three soldiers were wounded.

Afghanistan has been plunged into war since the October 2001 USA invasion-the opening shots in Washington's "war on terrorism".

"(The attacks do) not impact our commitment to Afghanistan, our commitment to the mission and seeing this through and our commitment about making sure that the Afghan national security forces have what they need to deal with this particular enemy", he stated.

Meanwhile, the head of US Central Command, Gen. Joseph Votel, told CNN that the attacks do nothing to dampen the United States' resolve to help Afghanistan, and that victory in the war-torn country remains "absolutely, absolutely" possible.

The minister of interior did not disclose exact information regarding the number of the police personnel who have lost their lives in the attack.
