Afghanistan mourns after bomb blast kills over 100

The blast tore through a crowded street in a busy part of Kabul at lunchtime

A security alert issued to foreigners on Saturday morning warned that the Islamic State group, which has terrorized the city in recent months, was planning "to conduct aggressive attacks" on supermarkets, shops and hotels frequented by foreigners.

Public health ministry spokesman, Mohammad Ismayeel Kawosi, also confirmed the casualty figures and said the wounded have been taken to different hospitals across the city.

The Taliban said it was behind the attack, which dealt a major blow to the US-backed Afghan government. Last October, the Taliban killed 176 people in a similar attack in the country.

In a separate statement, the spokesman for the U.N. Secretary-General said António Guterres "strongly condemns" the attack and said those responsible must be brought to justice. The bombing Saturday came just a week after Taliban militants killed 22 at an global hotel in the city.

UN Secretary General Guterres in a statement said that indiscriminate attacks against civilians are grave violations of human rights and worldwide humanitarian law, and can never be justified.

In May, 150 people were killed by a suicide bomb attack in Kabul.

The area, a shopping zone also known as Chicken Street, was crowded with pedestrians, shortly after noon local time. "India stands shoulder-to-shoulder with the people and government of Afghanistan in the fight against the forces of terror and evil", he said.

Afghanistan's Chief Executive, Abdullah Abdullah, condemned the attack, describing it as "insane, inhuman, heinous and a warcrime", via his official Twitter account.

"The Taliban's cruelty will not prevail", Trump continued.

Afghan government forces have struggled to fight the Taliban and other militant groups since USA and North Atlantic Treaty Organisation troops formally ended their combat mission in 2014.
