Caroline Wozniacki's epic piece of Australian Open history

Pain game Simona Halep’s wait for a major goes

Caroline Wozniacki has become the first ever Danish Grand Slam singles tennis champion after defeating world number one Simona Halep in three sets.

In round three, she played a 4-6, 6-4, 15-13 epic against Lauren Davis, saving three match points to come back from the brink. This is also her first final appearance at Melbourne, though like Halep, she has appeared in two finals previously - at the US Open.

The Dane brought up championship point following a long rally, showcasing her defensive and offensive skills, before collapsing to the court when Halep netted her backhand after two hours and 49 minutes of captivating action.

"I'm just waiting for the question, When are you going to win the second one?", she laughed.

Wozniacki was up a break in the third, then went behind a break only to get it right back for 4-4, hold her serve, and then play an unbelievable point while taking advantage of Halep's errors to win the match 6-4 in the third, taking the final advantage after front running for most of the match.

"I had match points against Li Na".

Wozniacki gave a special mention to her father Piotr, who had coached her since she was seven years old. "I had so many problems with my feet, pain everywhere", she said.

"But I think for the previous year and a half, I've proved that I can beat anyone out there on court. At the same time, I think it really was a great momentum shift for me going further into the tournament after that".

That means popular names such as Tebow, the 2007 Heisman Trophy victor , won't be given priority just because they are marketable. McMahon announced the return of the much-maligned league that spawned He Hate Me and flamed out in 2001 after one wild season.

"When I saw that ball go into the net, it was insane emotional", said the 27-year-old, who becomes the first Dane to win a grand slam singles title. In the end, she just ran out of steam.

"When I saw that ball go into the net", Wozniacki said, "it was insane emotional".

"Maybe the fourth time will be with luck". "But one thing that remained consistent was my fighting spirit and never giving up", Wozniacki, who now holds the record for length of time between stints at world number one, said. Wozniacki took the first set by 7-6 to take a lead, but Halep made a strong comeback in the second set winning it by a score of 6-3.

Halep didn't have the best start as she lost the first three games of the match, but then managed to recover and push the first set into the tiebreak, which she lost. It was a hard fought contest for both players, in Wozniacki's case, she needed strapping on her leg late in the third set to play on.

Halep, speaking on the court after the match, said: "I want to congratulate Caroline, it's unbelievable. I think both of us were very exhausted in the end".

"I'm just taking a second here to hug Daphne [trophy]". I think the most frustrating part was that when I was healthy I knew I can beat anyone. But, yeah, I'm really sad I couldn't win it.

Wozniacki has proven to get defensive under pressure, whilst Halep has proven that she can execute an aggressive game under extreme pressure.
