Woods' short game saved the day, says Hoffman

Tiger Woods back in action at Torrey Pines. More

His 189-yard iron shot on the 16th bounced on the green and then rolled just right of the cup.

Even when he wasn't sure where the ball was going off the tee, he didn't drop a shot.

A seven-time victor of the tournament, Woods made four birdies on the front side of the North Course at Torrey Pines (his final nine), including a two-putt birdie from 90 feet on his last hole.

But he puts it down to rust and says he's buoyed by the fact Torrey Pines' hard South course, on which the final two rounds are played, should stop anyone running away with the tournament. He hit his tee shot into the gallery, lowering his head and clinching up in frustration.

Then, Palmer had surgery on his left shoulder to clean out bone spurs and had not played since August until he headed to Honolulu two weeks ago.

Even more important, Tiger finished 36 holes looking as healthy as he has been in years, taking vicious cuts out of the heavy rough with nary a grimace nor a clutch at his back.

Continue to follow Tiger on the course this weekend with the Farmers Insurance Open Leaderboard.

Woods shot an even-par 72 on the South Course on Thursday.

Tap-in birdie. Paycheck in Woods' future. Woods hit the chip too hard, and it skidded to the back of the green, and he two-putted for bogey. "He's got his speed back, which is awesome to see". He had bogeyed the par-3 eighth to fall outside the cut bubble. He hit into the water with his second shot on the par-five 18th, but he saved par with a 15-foot putt.

Jason Day roars back into contention at Torrey Pines today.

Some 11 strokes off the lead when he made the turn and on the wrong side of the cut line, he converted a 45-foot birdie putt from off the green at the first hole (his 10 hole of the day), added another at the fifth hole and appeared to secure his weekend tee time with a 4-footer for birdie at No. 7.

Woods took line-of-sight relief from the media tent, laid up and two-putted for par from about 40 feet.

The 14-time major champion only found three fairways during his round, with a wayward tee shot seeing him slip down the field with a double bogey on the 13th.

Next best of the Australians is Cameron Smith, who almost withdrew on tournament eve with the flu, but shot a 68 to be tied 14th at five under and six shots back of the lead.

Starting on the par five tenth on the easier North Course - with a driveable par four to follow - should have offered Woods the ideal opportunity to make the fast start he needed after a so-so first round 72. That was on the second hole, when his approach from the bunker landed six feet behind the hole and went over the back into light rough.

Poor swing but ball took a fortunate bounce left to sit off front of green at par three.

So there are still two days to go, but what have we learned so far from this performance in this first official start back?
