Visitors to the capital will also find boat cruises are canceled and roads around the Eiffel Tower, which sits on the river's bank, are closed.

Floodwaters were nearing their peak in Paris on Saturday, with the rain-swollen Seine River engulfing scenic quays and threatening wine cellars and museum basements.

"No matter what we say, the more we reduce our greenhouse gas emissions, the more we reduce our impact on droughts and floods", she said. That's still a long way below 8.6 metres - the level the Seine reached in the 1910 "flood of the century".

The flooding is expected to reach its high mark of between 5.8 and 6.2 metres on Saturday, a similar level to flooding that hit the city in 2016, which forced the closure of several monuments, including the Louvre.

At least 395 people have been evacuated from at-risk buildings, while the Louvre art museum has closed its bottom floor.

Roads situated on the riverbanks have been closed, as have tunnels, parks and seven RER train stations whose line runs beneath the Seine.

Meteo France, the national weather agency, said 23 departments remained on orange alert, the second highest level of vigilance, urging people to limit their movement and to stay vigilant. Those on flood alert are: Aube, Jura, Marne, Saône-et-Loire, Eure, Paris, Seine-et-Marne, Yvelines, Yonne, Hauts-de-Seine, Seine-Saint-Denis, Val-de-Marne, and Val-d'Oise. "I understand that people might fear the floods because of the strength of the current but here we are in a port, no current, so there is no fear".

By midday on Friday the water was up to the Zouave's thighs.

PARIS-Must France simply get used to flooding?
