Meehan won't seek reelection in the 7th

Rep. Pat Meehan will not seek reelection in Pennsylvania after sexual harassment scandal

Rep. Pat Meehan, R-Penn., has chose to not seek re-election this year following reports that he settled a sexual harassment case with a former staffer by using taxpayer funds. House Speaker Paul Ryan on Saturday quickly removed him from the ethics panel and the committee on Monday launched an investigation into his actions.

Meehan came under increasing pressure this week after a New York Times story detailed an alleged harassment incident with a now former staffer and a reputed cash settlement to her from public funds.

Meehan is the fifth member of Congress to resign or say he won't run again amid a national reckoning over sexual misconduct in the workplace. The report, which cites unnamed sources, alleges Meehan romantically pursued the younger staffer and became angry with her when she entered a romantic relationship with another man.

The Times reported that the staffer reached a confidential agreement with Meehan that included a settlement in an undisclosed amount.

Meehan, 62, is a four-term congressman and former USA attorney in Philadelphia.

Party officials were reportedly considering Meehan's replacement after determining the sexual harassment claim represented a significant obstacle to reelection in a competitive suburban district narrowly captured by Hillary Clinton in 2016.

Then there is this: Meehan told Jonathan Tamari of the Inquirer and Daily News he felt "invited" to express romantic feelings to his aide.

Emmanuel Petit, who won the Premier League and FA Cup with Arsenal in 1998, wants Arsene Wenger to target bigger names. Therefore, any deal would outstrip the £46.5 million club-record purchase of Alexandre Lacazette last summer.

She filed a complaint, started working from home and eventually left the job before Meehan's office paid a settlement said to be "in the thousands".

Meehan called the controversy a distraction and said he needed "to own it because it is my own conduct that fueled the matter", according to the reports.

Meehan said he and the woman had worked together for years and that she was a critical hub in his office, a "gatekeeper".

He said he told the aide "that I was a happily married man and I was not interested in a relationship, particularly not any sexual relationship, but we were soul mates".

"Quite simply to me a soul-mate means a uniquely close person who is joined with you on a daily basis, in which you both share the routine successes and strains of a work day", he added.

He also walked back his "soul mates" comment, writing, "I truly didn't even consider or understand the full implications of the use of that term".
