Mark E Smith, legendary frontman of The Fall, dies aged 60

MOJO Magazine Honours List 2008- Launch

The musician, a founding member of what became a cult post-punk band, died at home yesterday morning.

Simon Wolstencroft, who was The Fall's drummer from 1986 until 1997, said Smith was "iconic".

The Fall manager and Smith's partner, Pam Vander - also known as Pam Van Damned - said Smith died at his home. The band released more than 30 studio albums over the years and scored a few hits on the United Kingdom indie charts during the early 1980s, including "Totally Wired", "The Man Whose Head Expanded" and "Kicker Conspiracy". Just last October, he performed in a wheelchair and last summer, the band was forced to cancel shows in NY and Louisville, Kentucky after Smith was hospitalized for issues related to his respiratory system. He performed in the U.K.in a wheelchair previous year, and his health reportedly continuned to deteriorate.

However, Smith's notorious prickliness and alcohol/amphetamine abuse made him a hard personality in the industry, to say the least, and led to poisoned relationships with many former bandmates (including ex-wife and one-time Fall-mate Brix Smith Start, and keyboardist and reported girlfriend Julie Nagle, whom he was charged with misdemeanor assault for attacking in 1998) and even with Peel himself, who Smith said of once in the late-'90s, "He's the fuckin' worst, he's worse than Tony Blackburn ever was". In the interim we have eight new songs ready to go and will try and let you hear a few before Christmas. She was often credited with bringing the band into a more mainstream, pop-orientated sound, and rejoined the band for two albums in 1995 and 1996.

Rockers Garbage shared: "Mark E Smith We will never forget you coming to see us play". So sharp, clever and untouchably cool.

De Blasio Backs Out of Mayors Meeting With Trump at White House
The money states received from the legal settlements was used to offset medical costs and fund anti-smoking campaigns. Mayor Bill de Blasio said the companies should be held accountable for the drug-abuse crisis.

Tim Burgess, of fellow Manchester band the Charlatans, said Smith was "a true uncompromising musical maverick". A genius, a curmudgeon and someone whose company it was an honour to share. "It was stopped in minutes by Fall fans". "Aged 16 he really did teach me so much ..."

I believe his final concert was at the Queen Margaret Union in Glasgow on 4th November 2017 and that night's setlist reads as follows: Wolf Kidult Man, Over! And we are all a bit gutted. Hope to replace shows within 4 - 6 weeks.

Smith was not in good shape in the months prior to his death.

Previous year on his 60th birthday the BBC mistakenly reported Mark had died.
