Casey Affleck Withdraws From Oscars: Won't Present Best Actress Award

Oscars: Casey Affleck Won't Present Best Actress Award

A Change.org petition started by New York-based director Cameron Bossert circulated a few months ago, calling for the academy to bar Affleck from presenting the best actress award. But years before that, he was sued for sexual harassment by two female crew members of I'm Still Here, the Joaquin Phoenix-starring fake documentary he made back in 2010.

Following a longstanding tradition, Affleck, who won Best Actor last year for Manchester by the Sea, was scheduled to present the Best Actress award this year.

Affleck has been dogged by allegations of inappropriate behavior towards women that has prompted criticism in the wake of the Harvey Weinstein scandal and #MeToo movement.

An online petition calling for Affleck's removal from the upcoming Oscars ceremony received nearly 20,000 signatures.

Jimmy Kimmel still has nightmares about the Oscars flub
The Oscars also will be televised live in more than 225 countries and territories worldwide. This morning the nominations for the premier awards event were announced.

"I believe that any kind of mistreatment of anyone for any reason is unacceptable and abhorrent, and everyone deserves to be treated with respect in the workplace and anywhere else", Affleck told TheBoston Globe.

A spokeswoman for Affleck, Mara Buxbaum, confirmed that Affleck would not be attending the Academy Awards ceremony this year, but declined further comment. "There's really nothing I can do about it". Deadline, which first reported Affleck's withdrawal, wrote that the actor didn't want his presence at the ceremony to distract from the nominees. The specter of Affleck presenting would have created controversy.

It has been a tradition at Oscars that the Best Actor victor presents the Best Actress trophy while the Best Actress victor presents Best Actor. Then again, he could just be trying to avoid looking like an ass on national television.

The 2018 Oscars will take place on 4 March in Los Angeles.
