Anti-Muslim German party member Arthur Wagner converts to Islam

Member Of German Nationalist Anti-Islamization Party Resigns After Converting To Islam

The far-right anti-Islam Alternative for Germany (AfD) party confirmed on Tuesday Wagners's conversion.

"Mr Wagner could also choose another religion", Daniel Friese, a spokesman of the party, told Berliner Zeitung, adding that Mr Wagner had resigned from the board two weeks ago.

'Only afterwards was it known that he had converted to Islam, ' Friese said.

Kalbitz told CNN that while "lots of Muslims in Germany are well integrated, Islam itself is not part of German culture", a point he reiterated in a Facebook post Wednesday.

"For us that is not a problem", said AfD party spokesman in response to the report.

Mr Wagner previously belonged to a group called "Christians in the AfD" and was a member of Angela Merkel's Christian Democrat CDU before jumping ship to the more right-wing party.

While the local branch of the AfD states on its website that "Islam has nothing to do in Germany", the official refrained from commenting on his conversion, saying he was driven by "personal reasons".

Flu Season is Getting Worse

One of the AfD's key's principles is that "Islam does not belong to Germany".

His drastic rhetoric helped him rise through the ranks to become a member of the AfD's executive committee in the state of Brandenburg.

"That's my private affair", he stressed, denying any pressure from the AfD to quit the party.

The party touts an anti-immigration, anti-Islam platform.

The party also once proposed the banning of new mosques being constructed in the nation. Frauke Petry, a former AfD head who was considered a moderate, argued in 2015 that officers should shoot migrants or refugees entering Germany, if necessary.

His party had had won its first parliamentary seats in the last election, becoming the third party with 12.6% of the vote.

"The growing Islamization of Germany poses an urgent challenge for its public and state order, cultural identity and the internal peace of our country", Gauland said.
