Saudi coalition announces United States dollars 1.5 billion in aid for Yemen

Saudi blockade of Yemen set to resume after brief respite

Yemen's humanitarian situation worsened due to a crippling blockade of rebel-held ports by the Saudi-led coalition.

The coalition pledged up to $40m for the expansion of ports to accommodate additional humanitarian shipments, adding that it would set up an air corridor between Riyadh and the central Yemeni province of Marib to run multiple aid flights of C130 cargo planes.

The conflict has killed nearly 10,000 people and left more than two million displaced.

The body requested $2.96 billion for humanitarian aid to respond to an ever-broadening crisis in the country - where war, looming starvation and cholera have killed thousands.

In 2017, donors provided US$1.65 billion (70.5 per cent) out of US$2.34 billion that humanitarian partners in Yemen requested.

According to the UN Office for Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), almost two million children are out of school, and 1.8 million children under the age of five are acutely malnourished - including 400,000 suffering from severe acute malnutrition and are 10 times more likely to die if they do not receive medical treatment. The Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights reported previous year that airstrikes remained the single largest cause of civilian casualties.

Coalition spokesperson colonel Turki Al-Maliki told state-run Saudi Press Agency that the missile was detected at around 12:38pm after being fired from Yemen's Saada Governorate.

DW notes that German arms exports to Saudi Arabia totalled nearly $550m in 2017.

More than 9,200 people have been killed in Yemen since 2015, when a Saudi-led military coalition intervened to back the country's internationally-recognised government against Iran-backed rebels. The U.S. supports the coalition with refuelling, logistics and intelligence.

Earlier this month, Norway suspended exports of weapons and ammunition to the United Arab Emirates over concerns they could be used in the war in Yemen.

The spokesman, Steffen Seibert said on Friday that the Federal Security Council was no longer issuing export licenses that "are not in accordance with the conclusion of the exploratory talks", Germany's official DPA news agency reported.

Berlin has halted all weapons sales to Riyadh and its allies, in part due to the latter's prosecution of an ongoing war in Yemen that is killing civilians by the thousands.
