West Nashville Sam's Club Among Unexpected Nationwide Closures

Walmart workers win pay rise after Trump tax cuts

Sam's Club, a division of Wal-Mart Stores Inc., announced changes to the business unit's USA real estate portfolio, with the closure of 63 clubs around the country.

"After a thorough review, it became clear we had built clubs in some locations that impacted other clubs, and where population had not grown as anticipated", Furner said in the email.

Among the stores that will be closing are the Sam's Clubs in Norfolk and Richmond, according to Business Insider.

"Hourly associates will continue receiving compensation for 60 days while they look for other opportunities in nearby clubs or Walmart stores", she said.

A Sam's Club store in Sacramento is one of dozens closing across the nation, according to a spokesperson from Walmart, which owns the stores.

They added that it's never easy to close stores and they'll be working with those impacted.

Ten of the affected stores will be turned into e-commerce distribution centers, and employees of those stores will have the opportunity to reapply for positions at those locations, a Walmart official said.

Honda Accord named vehicle of the Year
This marks the third year in a row that Honda has received an award from the North American jury of automotive journalists. The Honda Ridgeline truck won truck of the year in 2017, and the Civic won auto of the year in 2016, CNN Money reported .

Employees with at least 20 years at Walmart will qualify for the bonus, the company said, and the wage hike will take effect February 1.

Business Insider reported the closings could impact more than 11,000 Sam's Club employees across the country. Salaried employees, who already had 10 weeks paid maternity leave, will receive more paid parental leave.

The $1,000 bonus will go to employees who do not benefit from the newly announced wage increases.

The news of the sudden closures comes as the big-box retailer's parent company - Walmart - announced it would use savings from new tax legislation to raise starting wages for its employees. As of December, the average pay for full-time workers was $13 an hour.

On Jan. 1, the starting wage for large companies with more than 25 employees in California rose to $11 an hour from $10.50 as part of a state minimum-wage law approved in 2016.

The company stated that it also would create a new benefit to assist associates with adoption expenses.

In a separate news release, also issued Thursday, Walmart CEO Doug McMillon attributed the changes to a lower business tax rate recently approved by President Donald Trump and the U.S. Congress.
