A Greyhound spokeswoman initially said that 50 passengers were on the bus, but Schmaling told reporters Saturday that the vehicle was carrying 37 people, including the driver and the suspect.

Illinois State Police said they are investigating whether he was carrying a gun.

Authorities eventually stopped the bus with spike strips along Interstate 94 near the Wisconsin-Illinois boarder.

Reports are coming out of southeast Wisconsin of an incident involving a gunmen on a Greyhound bus Friday night.

The Racine County sheriff said on Saturday that Vargas-Rosas is an illegal immigrant who has been deported before.

Eastbound I-94 was closed for several hours and traffic was brought to a standstill as authorities remained on the scene.

NFL Playoffs Guide: The Road to Super Bowl LII
The Saints and Vikings will square off again on Sunday in the National Football League playoffs, kicking off at 3:40 p.m. It's their first time hosting the NFC Championship Game since January 2005, when they won to advance to the Super Bowl.

"(He was) just saying that he was going to kill us, that he was going to put a bullet in our head", passenger Patrick Dodd said.

"Every passenger was searched", Schmaling said.

Authorities are still not sure if Vargas-Rosas actually possessed a gun on the bus, but Schmaling said he certainly acted as though he might pull one out and use it.

Milwaukee County, and then Kenosha County Sheriff's Office deputies', attempted to pull the Greyhound bus over by activating their sirens and lights but were unsuccessful. Vargas-Rosas surrendered, but later threatened investigators as he was being interviewed, Schmaling said.

Vargas-Rosas was taken into custody. He is in the country illegally, Schmaling said, noting that he had been deported to Mexico some time ago.

"There's a lot of areas you could hide a weapon on that bus, as you could imagine", he said. Charges against him include making terroristic threats.
