Toronto Police Say A Man Attacked A Girl On Her Way To School And Cut Off Her Hijab

Toronto Police spokesperson Katrina Arrogante told The Canadian Press that officers aren't treating the incident as a hate crime, but are not ruling it out.

The Toronto District School Board says a Grade 6 student at Pauline Johnson Junior Public School was attacked by an unknown man on her way to school.

A short time later, he returned to assault her again and ended up cutting 11 inches (30 centimeters) from her hijab, she said.

"I turned around and I saw him with his scissors", Khawlah said.

Khawlah Noman, 11, speaks to reporters at Pauline Johnson Junior Public School, after she told police that a man cut her hijab with scissors in Toronto, Ontario, Canada on January 12.

Sharing his frightful experience, her younger brother said, "I saw my sister, she was frightened. I feel like this should stop". "In the meantime, we're offering support to the impacted student and her family".

When Khawlah was asked what she would say to the man if she had a chance, she said, "I think what you're doing is wrong".

The suspect is described as an Asian man with a moustache and glasses who is around 20 years old, wearing a black hoodie and black trousers.

Hamas tunnel destroyed by Israeli airstrikes
"Hamas must understand that we will not permit these attacks and we will respond with even greater force". Israeli jets bombed the tunnel opening on the Gaza side of the border late on Saturday night.

Their mother, Samia Samad, said she can not understand why someone would do something like this.

"I felt really scared and confused because I didn't feel comfortable that people are doing this.", the girl was quoted by media.

The man approached the child from behind Friday morning as she made her way to school with her younger brother.

Spokesman Ryan Bird says the school immediately contacted police and the girl's parents when the student arrived at school.

The incident caught the attention of politicians at all levels of government.

The incident has inspired an outpouring of support, including from Prime Minister Justin Trudeau. "I want her and her family and her friends and community that that is not what Canada is and that is not who Canadians are".

Ontario Prime Minister Kathleen Wynne called the alleged assault a "cowardly act of hatred, which has no place" in the province.

"This does not represent who we are", the premier added in a statement posted to Twitter. "We must stand firm in our support to this young girl who was assaulted simply for wearing a hijab".
