Google acquires UK-based sound tech startup Redux at an undisclosed amount

Cambridge-based Redux bought by Google

Redux was founded in 2013 out of Cambridge, and built technology that uses vibrations to turn surfaces of phones or tablets into speakers or provide haptic feedback.

Google did not immediately respond to a Fortune request for comment and clarification about the apparent acquisition. It wasn't made clear when Google bought the startup or how much money it spent to buy Redux, but the acquisition happened in August 2017, according to Crunchbase. According to regulator filings, the shares of Redux' holding company were transferred to Alphabet in early December past year. Being able to do away with, or at least shrink, that physical component could be another significant advantage to smartphones with Redux technology onboard.

Now, Alphabet company Google has reportedly acquired a company which could help with that headache.

HP issues global recall of laptops with defective batteries
Three of those customers also reported property damage of almost $5,000, and one ended up with first-degree burns on their hand. While in "Battery Safety Mode", the laptops can still function safely while connected to an HP power adaptor.

At the time, it said the sound quality was 'decent'. By vibrating the screen using tiny actuators, sound is created from the display.

So far, Redux has only been able to use its technologies inside PCs and some auto infotainment systems - but that could be about to change. What we do care about is this tech that we could see used on some level in future Pixel phones or other touchscreen devices from Google. While the external space a speaker demands is one thing, it also occupies room inside the phone. Redux's website is now blank, and its official Twitter account has not posted an update in almost nine months.

Google (GOOG, GOOGL) acquired a United Kingdom speaker tech startup late past year for undisclosed terms. The feature would eliminate the need for separate speakers but still let users play audio, potentially creating opportunities for Google to develop new smartphone design concepts.
