Intel says security patches slow down chips by six percent

Microsoft said it would soon resume Windows operating system software updates to affected AMD devices via its Windows Update process

There's no way to fix the flaw in the processor itself, and the update can be problematic for certain antivirus software and stop computers from starting up. However, bad news comes with the revelation that the mitigation protocols put in place with Variant 2 can have a profound effect on system performance, especially for users running Haswell (or older) processors on Windows 10 and Windows Server customers (regardless of what processor being used). Presumably, it would take too much work to fix operating systems that are supposed to be discontinued in a few years anyway.

Myerson's most cautionary remarks, though, were reserved for the slowdown effects expected for Windows Server products.

In a blog post, Microsoft's OS chief, Terry Myerson, explained that patches for 41 of the 45 editions of Windows that Microsoft distributes now have patches available.

Currently, Microsoft supports 45 different releases of Windows.

The basic gist here is this: the older your processor and the older your Windows version, the bigger the performance impact will be.

Vikings will play Panthers-Saints victor in divisional round
Both rushed for more than 1,500 yards from scrimmage with Kamara perhaps the most electric of the two. Even for players who weren't on the team's last injury report , the bye week carried plenty of value.

However, even on modern systems, Microsoft said that users should still see single digit percent slowdowns. However, he emphasized that businesses running transactional processing systems or time-sensitive applications need to conduct testing before they apply any OS security updates.

Security researchers disclosed the flaws on January 3 that affected almost every modern computing device containing chips from Intel, AMD and ARM Holdings, owned by Japan's SoftBank Group Corp.

With Windows 8 and Windows 7 on older silicon (2015-era PCs with Haswell or older CPU), we expect most users to notice a decrease in system performance. The company said "the typical home and business PC user should not see significant slowdowns in common tasks such as reading email, writing a document or accessing digital photos". Ever since Microsoft delivered the update last week, AMD users have been posting to the Windows support site with stories of PCs that refuse to boot. The company said it did not have a comprehensive picture of how the patches would affect server workloads. But Liverpool, England-based security researcher Kevin Beaumont, who's been tracking patches that are being issued to mitigate Meltdown and Spectre, says it's likely that Microsoft will issue another monthly patch release once it resolve the AMD problem.

Both Intel and Microsoft said that they would continue to provide updates.
