Trump's Support for the Iranian Protests

US faces criticism at Security Council meeting on Iran protests

Russian Federation challenged right at the outset the jurisdiction of the UNSC over a situation that it called a strictly domestic affair of Iran that would be best left for the Iranian authorities to deal with.

A UN Security Council emergency meeting on the protests roiling Iran showed Tehran "the world will be watching" its actions, the USA ambassador said Friday. "It is a powerful exhibition of courageous people who have become so fed up with their oppressive government that they are willing to risk their lives in protest".

Pakistani military expert, Amir Rana, wants the worldwide community to respect his country's efforts to combat terrorism.

The U.S. called Friday's meeting after giving moral support to the anti-government protesters in a week of demonstrations and counter-demonstrations.

The Trump administration should not only stop threatening the country with more sanctions, but should also let the Iranian people decide their internal affairs for themselves.

As the Iranian protests continue into its eighth day, and the regime carries out its violent crackdown, the world is indeed watching.

The Netherlands hoped the meeting would "work as a preventive measure to avoid further escalation of violence", Dutch Ambassador Karel van Oosterom said.

Still, the United Nations charter empowers the council to "investigate any dispute, or any situation which might lead to global friction", and the US wasn't alone in thinking the Iranian protests qualified. Authorities say the anti-government protests are waning.

Iran's prosecutor general, Mohammad Jafar Montazeri, alleged Thursday that an American CIA official was the "main designer" of the demonstrations.

But Iran's Ambassador to the UN Gholamali Khoshroo criticized the council for taking up a matter his country considers "purely domestic", and called it bullying by the United States. The CIA declined to comment.

The French ambassador to the council, while expressing concern about the disrespect of the rights of demonstrators, questioned whether that in itself would warrant raising the issue at the UNSC level. Due to the Trump administration, it's not only watching, it's also acting.

"These sanctions target key entities involved in Iran's ballistic missile program, which the Iranian regime prioritizes over the economic well-being of the Iranian people", Mnuchin said.

Iran signed a nuclear deal with the United States, Britain, France, Germany, Russia and China in 2015, easing sanctions in exchange for curbs to the country's nuclear programme.
