Packers promote Brian Gutekunst to general manager

Packers continue GM interviews with top internal candidate Friday

The Packers tabbed director of player personnel Brian Gutekunst as their new general manager, John McClain of the Houston Chronicle reported Sunday. He will replace Ted Thompson, who previously served as the team's GM for 13 seasons before transitioning to a different role within the organization.

Multiple reports confirm as much, with both Albert Breer of TheMMQB.com and Adam Schefter of ESPN reporting that the contract is for five years.

Seahawks fans can rest easy now knowing general manager John Schneider will be staying in Seattle.

Saturday morning NFL's Ian Rapoport tweeted Green Bay had requested an interview with Schneider but was denied. After bouncing around the league (including a brief stint in Seattle), he returned to Green Bay in 2002 where he remained until he was named Seattle's general manager in 2010.

Obama Will Be Letterman's First Guest On New Netflix Series
Other notable guests on the show will be George Clooney , Malala Yousafzai , Jay-Z, Tina Fey and Howard Stern . This would be Obama's first televised interview since his departure from the White House a year ago.

Gutekunst, 44, has been with the Packers since 2012 and became the team's director of player personnel in 2016.

Gutekunst will be entering his 20th season with the Packers. A source said McCarthy is not opposed to working with any of the internal candidates, despite reports that he would try to leave if Ball got the job.

It's possible Green Bay will still make philosophical changes to its coaching and scouting methods, and it seems likely Gutekunst's promotion will coincide with a more active approach in free agency and on the trade market - two avenues Thompson was infamously loathe to travel down.
