Health officials: 13 people have died from the flu this season

California has reported 27 deaths so far this flu-season and hospitals have begun turning patients away due to overcrowded emergency rooms

The last time they needed an extended treatment area was during the 2009 flu pandemic.

So far, thirteen flu-related pediatric deaths have been reported.

By February previous year, flu deaths had gone from the three reported in December to 68.

With flu cases soaring in OH, the state health department says it has been a rough season so far.

The flu has prompted extra precautions at one MI prison after learning of a couple of confirmed cases. That same report shows that southern Oklahoma had a relatively small number of people hospitalized from the flu, but in Johnston County, you can see a noticeable difference.

Gunzenhauser said vaccination against influenza lowers one's chances of catching the flu or being a carrier. In Knox County, the health department offers free flu shots at all three of its locations, Monday through Friday.

Paul Twomey, medical director for Yorkshire and the Humber, said: "It's not too late to get your flu vaccination".

The Ohio Department of Health continues to alert the public about the importance of flu vaccination as flu-associated hospitalizations continue to increase across the state as kids head back to school from winter break. He said influenza is especially risky for the elderly, who are at greater risk of developing pneumonia or other complications along with the flu - conditions that could be fatal when combined.

"The earlier you get treated, the better", Rasnake said. If you do get the flu, taking antiviral drugs is key to shortening the severity and duration of the illness, he added.

"Each year the World Health Organisation determines which influenza strains should be covered within the influenza vaccination programme and the health services across the United Kingdom use these recommended vaccines as these are likely to be the most effective".
