Trump talked of rescinding Gorsuch nomination after criticism

Still, Short said he never believed Gorsuch's nomination was in jeopardy, "nor did the president ever suggest to me that he wanted to pull him".

President Donald Trump took to Twitter on Tuesday to blast the Washington Post and accuse the paper of fabricating sources for an article saying he considered "rescinding" his nomination of Neil Gorsuch to the United States Supreme Court. He's new to government, and so he probably wasn't steeped in the long-running protocols that establish the relationships between [the Justice Department], FBI and White House.

The Washington Post story itself acknowledges that it is "unclear" whether Trump was seriously considering rescinding the Gorsuch appointment or merely voicing frustrations with the headlines. Richard Blumenthal, D-Connecticut, that he found the president's attacks on the federal judiciary "disheartening" and "demoralizing," the report said.

For instance, no one gave Trump credit for opting not to withdraw his Supreme Court pick's nomination after the judge mildly criticized his attacks on the judiciary.

"Loyalty means that you agree with him, you are simpatico on issues, that your philosophy mirrors his and that you will not be publicly critical of the President", Dawsey said on CNN. "If you have a problem with him, he wants you to tell him that privately". But it quickly became apparent that Trump had not been informed or bought into the strategy.

Trump, however, signaled his approval of Gorsuch.

Trump was anxious that Gorsuch would not be "loyal", one of the sources told the Post.

The Post, citing White House officials, also said Trump was upset that Gorsuch did not appear to be sufficiently grateful for his nomination.

White House Legislative Affairs Director Marc Short was able to locate the note and show it to the president a week later, softening Trump's concerns.
