Reports by South Korea previously stated the North was capable of producing biological agents such as anthrax and smallpox that could be used as a part of biological warfare.

The report published by The Asahi Shimbun quoted an "intelligence source" in Seoul which said Pyongyang is conducting "heat and pressure resistance tests to see whether anthrax germs can survive at temperatures of 7,000 degrees or higher" - the temperature at which an intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) re-enters the Earth's atmosphere.

"North Korea-a country that starves its own people-has spent hundreds of millions of dollars on nuclear, chemical, and biological weapons that could threaten our homeland", the document states.

North Korea has been developing its missile program for decades, and a test last month let the world know that it has the U.S. East Coast within range of its latest Hwasong model.

The 10 vessels had reportedly been conducting ship-to-ship transfers of refined petroleum products to North Korean vessels or transporting North Korean coal in violation of United Nations sanctions imposed over Pyongyang's nuclear and missile programmes.

Although North Korea is party to both the Biological and Toxin Weapons Convention and the Geneva Protocol, it is suspected of maintaining an ongoing biological weapons program.

Both chemical and biological weapons were mentioned in reference to North Korea in a National Security Strategy unveiled by Trump on Tuesday.

North Korea is experimenting with the possibility of arming warheads for its intercontinental ballistic missiles with ANTHRAX, it has been reported.
