McCain feeling well, returning after holidays

John McCain of Arizona is not expected to return to Washington until January, which means he will likely miss two crucial votes before lawmakers return home for the Christmas recess.

McCain, who left Washington Sunday, will spend the holidays with his family.

"He is grateful for the excellent care he continues to receive, and appreciates the outpouring of support from people all over the country", the statement said.

Sen. McCain announced in July that he had a glioblastoma, an aggressive brain tumor, after doctor's discovered it while removing of a blood clot.

The 81-year-old senator will undergo physical therapy and rehabilitation at the Mayo Clinic in the state after spending several days at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center in Maryland.

In a brief statement, the senator's office provided an assessment from Mark Gilbert, chief of neuro-oncology at the National Institutes of Health's National Cancer Institute.

"An evaluation of his underlying cancer shows he is responding positively to ongoing treatment", Gilbert said. He is expected to vote on the tax bill.

The Republicans were also without Sen.

The passage of the tax bill, however, does not hinge on McCain's support because the GOP has a 52-48 vote advantage in the Senate.

McCain rebounded quickly, but his condition has appeared to worsen in recent weeks.

McCain started undergoing chemotherapy and radiation treatment in the summer and returned to the Senate after Labor Day and has kept a busy work schedule.
