Google will turn on native ad-blocking in Chrome on February 15

Google's Chrome browser will soon be removing advertisements from sites that fall short of industry standards, the company announced Tuesday. This announcement will have a devastating effect on publishers, marketers and bloggers that use ads as one of the ways of generating revenues for the sites. But now we know exactly when: February 15, 2018 (via VentureBeat) is the go-live date provided by the company for introduction of its built-in enforcement of the standards established by the Coalition for Better Ads, of which it is a member.

Google announced its ad-blocking plans in June, and has been working with other websites and ad agencies to come up with best practices.

Announced on Monday, the Coalition for Better Ads Experience Program is a voluntary initiative created to improve the online ad experience for both consumers and publishers. Sites that do not resolve these issues within 30 days of being reported will have all ads blocked by Chrome, which will hopefully encourage online publishers to maintain a high standard of accessibility in choosing which types of ads they display.

However, it will block some of the most annoying ads you're likely to encounter while using the internet. They will be able to submit their site for re-review once the violations have been fixed. In addition, FireFox browser also comes with extension to effectively block unwanted popups, popunders and overlay ads.

It's different from third-party ad blockers that block all ads indiscriminately. Banned units include autoplay videos with automatic sound and prestitial countdown ads, which are full-page takeovers that activate before entering a site.
