NBC Paid Woman Severance After She Accused Chris Matthews of Sexual Harassment

Chris Matthews on Trump Watch

An MSNBC spokesman confirmed Saturday to the Daily Caller website that the company had made a separation-related payment to one of Matthews' employees after the woman complained of sexual harassment. The rep said the network paid a lesser amount to the woman as severance pay when she left the network.

Two sources told the Caller that a woman who was then an assistant producer on Matthews' show "Hardball" accused the longtime MSNBC host of making inappropriate sexual comments about her while in the company of others.

The incident was reviewed and Matthews was formally reprimanded for comments that were deemed inappropriate and juvenile, based on discussions with individuals involved in the matter.

It is not clear whether Matthews' accuser left the company as a result of the allegations, although she has consequently gone on to work in a number of high-profile media positions.

The longtime host of the political talk show "Hardball with Chris Matthews" is the latest in a series of powerful men in USA media, entertainment and politics to have been accused of sexual misconduct or inappropriate behavior.

This would not be the first time Matthew's off-color comments have made the front page.

In late November, NBC News fired "Today" host Matt Lauer following a complaint accusing Lauer of inappropriate sexual behavior during the 2014 Sochi Olympics and in the workplace after the games.

Halperin, a former NBC commentator and author, was sacked in October after numerous women and fellow employees came forth with sexual assault allegations of groping and other unwanted physical contact.

And in October, MSNBC political analyst Mark Halperin was nudged out after several women accused him of sexual harassment while he was political director at ABC News. Lauer has said he is "truly sorry" but said some of what was being said about him was untrue or mischaracterized.
