Bumper sales for United Kingdom retailers in November: ONS

Bumper sales for UK retailers in November: ONS

"The boost from Black Friday will be fleeting", Samuel Tombs of Pantheon Macroeconomics said.

The reaction by the market was muted and some said the increase in retail sales could reflect spending for Christmas being move forward to enjoy the discounts offered on Black Friday.

The data is likely to appease Central Bank of England, which for the first time raised interest rates over more than a decade last month.

Month-on-month, sales rose by 1.1% in November from October, which was ahead of analysts' forecasts for 0.4% growth.

Kallum Pickering, an economist with Berenberg Bank, said the figures added to signs from factories that Britain's economy was picking up a bit of speed in late 2017 and he expected that momentum to continue into 2018. "Households will simply borrow a little more and save a little less to smooth out their consumption", he said.

Retail sales volume climbed 1.1 percent on a monthly basis in November, with strong contribution from households goods stores. Economists said the sales growth would help boost GDP growth in the final three months of the year. This was the biggest increase since April, when sales advanced 1.9 percent.

The ONS survey period ended on November 25, the day after Black Friday.

Josh Gordon: Cleveland Browns WR scores first touchdown since 2013
Kizer looked for wide receiver Josh Gordon and found him for a 38-yard gain on the Browns' first play to the Green Bay 46. The Browns responded with an 88-yard drive ending with Kizer's touchdown pass to Coleman for the 21-7 advantage.

But the picture was less rosy when comparing the past three months with the same period a year earlier - smoothing out monthly volatility.

In non-food sales, clothing and footwear rebounded from a slump in October to rise 2.3% in November from a year earlier.

When the United Kingdom central bank raised interest rates in early November, the regulator predicted that household consumption growth would slow to 1% next year.

The ONS found revealed the quantity of products bought in food stores decreased by 0.1% year-on-year, while the amount spent increased by 3.5%, due largely to the 3.6% increase in average food prices.

ONS senior statistician Rhian Murphy told media: "Household goods stores had a good November, with a number of businesses saying that Black Friday promotions boosted sales".
