Trump calls on Saudi Arabia to lift Yemen blockade

Saudi Arabia continues to bomb Yemen's Sana'a despite calls for humanitarian ceasefire: UN

Earlier in the day, Yemen's Interior Ministry issued a statement confirming the death of Saleh during clashes in capital Sana'a. The Saudis responded by shutting down all of Yemen's ports, preventing any shipments from entering the country. There are also seven commercial vessels carrying desperately needed fuel en route to Yemen, he said. He said a flight for non-governmental organizations is expected Wednesday.

The intervention by the exiled Ahmed Ali Saleh, if confirmed, could shift the balance of power yet again. The council called the deteriorating humanitarian situation "dire", saying Yemen "stands at the brink of catastrophic starvation". "This must be done for humanitarian reasons immediately".

Dujarric said Cheikh Ahmed "emphasized that the need for a negotiated settlement is more acute today than ever" and reiterated "that only an inclusive peace process can bring a peaceful, viable and sustainable solution for the people of Yemen".

"Increased hostilities will further threaten civilian lives and exacerbate their suffering", he said. "All sides must support a political process with facilitating humanitarian relief as the top priority".

Saudi Arabia and its allies struck a day after Saleh's son vowed to lead a campaign against the Houthis. Iran supports the rebels, known as Houthis, but denies arming them. The Anadolu Agency quoted sources, as saying, that the mortar shell triggered the fire at the embassy premises.

The killing could either push the conflict towards United Nations peace negotiations or make it an "even more vicious war", Mattis told reporters.

The assault and hostage-taking comes amid heightened tensions after forces loyal to former president Ali Abdullah Saleh severed ties with the Houthis, sparking days of gun battles and artillery fire in the capital.

Fierce clashes broke out in Sanaa last week between Saleh supporters and the Iran-backed Houthis as a fragile alliance between the two sides broke down.

The agency has also said it "lacks the resources" to investigate every one of the comment records. Separate independent studies also found high levels of suspected fake comments.

Speaking before a gathering of supporters, al-Houthi says: "We knew that they were deceived. we hadn't hoped for what happened". I've got numbers of senators coming up to me often with concerns about how Saudi is dealing with humanitarian concerns in Yemen.

At least 234 people have been killed and more than 400 wounded in fighting in Sanaa since the beginning of the month, the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) said on Tuesday.

It's not clear how many civilians are among the dead.

Saudi Arabia, accusing Iran of backing the rebels, intervened in the Yemen war on behalf of the government the following year.

The rebels dispersed the protest but video footage of the women fleeing the scene was posted on social media.

In other areas like Fag Attan, Saleh's forces are still surrounded by Houthis.

The bloody conflict has left impoverished Yemen as the world's leading humanitarian disasters with millions of people facing starvation.
