Conflicting Reports Emerge About Subpoena for Deutsche Bank in Trump-Russia Investigation

A United States federal investigator probing alleged Russian interference in the 2016 presidential election asked Deutsche Bank for data on accounts held by President Donald Trump and his family, a person close to the matter said on Tuesday.

A source close to the matter said to AFP that Germany's biggest bank had received a subpoena for documents related to its business dealings with the U.S. president, after Bloomberg News and the German business daily Handelsblatt first reported a summons by special counsel Robert Mueller.

Trump's relationship with Deutsche Bank stretches back some two decades and the roughly $300 million he owes to the bank represents almost half of his outstanding debt, according to a July 2016 analysis compiled by Bloomberg news agency.

Mueller is investigating alleged Russian attempts to influence the election, and potential collusion by Trump aides.

In July, Trump said in an interview with the New York Times that if Mueller examined his family's finances beyond any relationship with Russian Federation he'd consider it "a violation".

The bank said additionally in a statement that "Deutsche Bank takes its legal obligations seriously and remains committed to cooperating with authorized investigation into this matter".

A 2000 General Accounting Office report that detailed those figures said that $36 million came from congressional appropriations and $16 million from other federal agency costs.

President Donald Trump's personal lawyer John Dowd disputed that account, saying he had been told by Deutsche Bank that no such subpoena had been issued.

The bank rejected demands in June by US House Democrats to provide details of Mr Trump's finances, citing privacy laws. He has announced criminal charges against four people so far, including Trump's former national security advisor, Michael Flynn, who pleaded guilty to lying to the Federal Bureau of Investigation.

Deutsche Bank has been one of the few major banks willing to regularly lend to Trump, who alienated large banks in NY with his past financial troubles.

The Trump International Hotel is shown on August 10, 2017 in Washington. In July, he told the New York Times such an action would amount to crossing a red line. But the Deutsche Bank subpoena may indicate that the special prosecutor is still looking at a wide range of data, including the president's financial dealings. "Then Justice claimed that providing House investigators with classified material could hurt security or sources".

As Mueller's investigation unfolds, Trump has gone on the offensive.
