IOC Bans Russia From 2018 Winter Olympics

RUSADA remains non-compliant with the World Anti Doping Agency

Speaking at the press conference announcing the ruling of the IOC Executive was Samuel Schmid, the Swiss politician who led the IOC inquiry into whether anti-doping subterfuge was carried out with the backing of the Russian government. Instead of marching out behind of the Russian flag during the opening ceremonies, they will march behind the Olympic flag.

International Olympic Committee commission chairman Samuel Schmid says the doping program "was under the authority of the Russian sports ministry".

The IOC announced the decision after examining evidence of state-sponsored doping over several years that reached its zenith at the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia.

The ban does offer a pathway for individual, clean Russian athletes to still participate in the upcoming Games in Pyeongchang, which start February 9.

In addition, the IOC suspended the membership of Russian Olympic Committee President Alexander Zhukov.

At the State Kremlin Palace on December 1, FIFA President Gianni Infantino said at a joint news conference with Mutko that the IOC's decision would not affect the World Cup.

Voyager 1 spacecraft thrusters fired up for first time since 1980
However, Voyager 1 does have a set of four backup trajectory correction maneuver thrusters that haven't been used since the 1980s. The spacecraft had been relying on its primary thrusters to keep it oriented, but these have degraded over time.

However in the past month there has been a sea-change in the tone and language of the International Olympic Committee and the World Anti-Doping Agency.

Russian Deputy Prime Minister Vitaly Mutko was also banned from any future participation at the Olympic Games.

Russian Federation will defend its athletes against doping allegations and work to preserve its ties with the International Olympic Committee (IOC), Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said on Tuesday. This was reported on the website of the International Olympic Committee.

The former head of Moscow's anti-doping laboratory, Grigory Rodchenkov, who is exiled in the United States, describes an organised doping campaign including at least 15 medallists from the Sochi Olympics, with the close involvement of the sports ministry and Russia's FSB security service, the successor to the KGB.

Bach said: "This should serve as a catalyst for a more effective anti-doping system led by Wada".

Meanwhile the credibility of the Russian whistleblower Grigory Rodchenkov, who ran the Moscow anti-doping laboratory before fleeing a year ago and revealing what he knew to McLaren, was recently enhanced by the Oswald commission, who confirmed that he was a "truthful witness". It wants the scientist extradited from the United States, where he is a protected witness. "There were no ideal options, but this decision will clearly make it less likely that this ever happens again", it said. They've taken away 11 of Russia's 33 medals.
