North Korea: US 'begging' for war with 'largest ever' joint aerial drill

Imagery Shows Latest North Korean Missile Larger, More Powerful

"The US aircraft that have landed on South Korea include six F-22s, six F-35s, six EA-18Gs", the official said.

"The U.S. and South Korean puppet warmongers would be well advised to bear in mind that their DPRK-targeted military drill will be as foolish as an act precipitating their self-destruction", it said.

His comments came three days after North Korea carried out its first ballistic missile test in two months, in defiance of United Nations resolutions.

The two countries are set to begin their largest ever co-operative air exercise - dubbed Vigilant Ace - on Monday, with 230 aircraft, including F-22 Raptor stealth jet fighters, ready to take flight.

North Korea has boasted - and Western experts agree - that the Hwasong-15 missile tested on Wednesday is capable of reaching the United States, raising the prospect of a direct nuclear threat to Washington.

With every missile launch or nuclear test, Kim has improved his country's capabilities, McMaster said.

Yemen conflict: Saudi-led coalition welcomes Saleh talks offer
The United Nations envoy to Yemen, Ismail Ould Cheikh Ahmed, and the ICRC urged the parties to avoid targeting civilians. Saleh's supporters managed on Saturday to seize control of several embassies and government buildings from the Houthis.

After this week's move by Pyongyang, sirens signalling a nuclear attack warning are being tested on the islands of Hawaii for the first time since the end of the Cold War.

North Korea has repeatedly rejected accusations of human rights abuses and blames sanctions for a dire humanitarian situation.

The Rodong Sinmun commentary said the aerial wargames show "the enemies' moves to start a nuclear war have reached a risky stage". It launched an advanced intercontinental ballistic missile, the Hwasong-15, that state-controlled media described as the "most powerful ICBM" carrying a "super-large heavy warhead" to unprecedented heights of nearly 4,500 kilometers (2,800 miles).

One U.S. intelligence official told Reuters the Hwasong-15 test appears to demonstrate a more powerful North Korean solid-fuel propulsion system, especially in its second-stage rocket. The larger size of the first and second stages allows the missile to fly a greater distance with a larger payload.

At the California forum, McMaster said Kim was extremely unlikely to change his behavior "without some significant new actions in the form of much more severe sanctions" and "complete enforcement of the sanctions that are in place".
