Ole Miss QB Shea Patterson given permission to contact other teams

Former Ole Miss head coach Hugh Freeze looks on against Memphis during their NCAA football game at Vaught Hemingway Stadium in Oxford Miss. Saturday Oct. 1 2016

Many suspected Shea Patterson could be on the move following Friday's announced penalties against Ole Miss handed down by the NCAA - which include a bowl ban for 2018 and reduced scholarships in future seasons - now that move is very much in play following news of the quarterback seeking, and receiving, permission to explore his options to transfer from the school.

"We wish that this were over", Ole Miss athletics director Ross Bjork said. The school met with the NCAA Committe on Infractions in September, and the school is set to release the official findings at some point this morning. The NCAA says six football staff members and 12 boosters contributed to the current violations. The organization noted it was the third time in three decades that the athletic department and boosters were accused of breaking the rules.

In all, Ole Miss will lose 24 scholarships. "We don't make that decision, that is the NCAA that makes that decision on multiple years remaining of eligibility".

According to ESPN, the Rebels also received a 13-scholarship reduction, financial penalties, and various coaches and administrators received show-causes for different amounts of time.

The head coach must serve a two-conference-game suspension for the 2018 season should any NCAA school hire him between December 1, 2017, and November 30, 2018.

"The additional postseason ban is excessive and does not take into account the corrective actions that we have made in personnel, structure, policies and processes to address the issues", he stated.

He is free to work as a coordinator or assistant coach at another program.

The sanctions also included the "vacation of all regular-season and postseason wins in which ineligible student-athletes competed".

The complicated case consisted of 21 alleged violations, including 15 that were Level I, which the NCAA considers the most serious.

The 2017 season wasn't much better for Patterson, following the abrupt exit of Freeze, Patterson was lost for the season in the LSU game.

Luke was named the interim coach in July after Freeze surprisingly resigned following a school investigation into his phone records that found what the school called personal misconduct.
