Tesla Switches on World's Biggest Lithium Ion Battery

The world's biggest battery was officially launched in Australia on December 1

But with temperatures across South Australia and Victoria hitting the mid-30s, and output from the state's wind farms low, the battery was called upon early to help meet Thursday afternoon's peak demand. That's no small feat considering the battery is the size of a football field and is capable of powering 30,000 homes.

Weatherill came under fire previous year after the entire state went black following a major storm, and raced to shore up the state's grid with a A$510 million ($385 million) plan, including ordering the big battery and installing diesel-fueled turbines.

Tesla Inc switched on the world's biggest lithium ion battery in time to feed South Australia's shaky power grid for the first day of summer.

The Tesla CEO, who is often compared to real-life Tony Stark, had promised that Tesla would build the 100-megawatt hour battery in just 100 days, failing which he would provide it for free.

The facility which is being tested in the city of Jamestown is all set to launch officially soon and will be paired to the nearby Neoen Hornsdale Wind Farm for added stability.

"South Australia is now leading the world in dispatchable renewable energy, delivered to homes and businesses 24/7", Weatherill said.

Jay Weatherill stated now, the South Australia is competing others in the rival of making renewable energy and it has made the history in the making.

Tesla's massive 100MW lithium-ion battery, the largest of its kind in the world and a project that won Elon Musk a $50 million bet, has gone live today in South Australia. South Australia, of course, is no stranger to power outages, as blackouts left much of the area without power last summer. "The ability to dispatch into the system when needed, also opens up the opportunity for Hornsdale Power Reserve to sign competitive long term contracts with medium-sized business directly", the statement continued.

But critics have described it as a "Hollywood solution" in a country that still relies on fossil fuels, mainly coal, for two-thirds of its electricity.
