Potsdam Christmas market evacuated after bomb is found in German city

German Christmas market evacuated after suspicious package delivered

A device was found just outside of Potsdam, just outside of Berlin.

The police evacuated and cordoned off the immediate area and said they're still assessing the contents of the defused package.

German police have evacuated a Christmas market in the city of Potsdam following reports about an explosive device planted nearby.

A year ago a Christmas market in Berlin itself was attacked, killing a total of 12 people.

According to reports, the suspicious package is reportedly 20 inches long and 16 inches wide and "has wires inside".

The standout feature, however, would have to be the 160-kilogram gingerbread house in the State Dining Room of the White House . There, the first lady sat with children from Joint Base Andrews to make holiday decorations out of gumdrops.

The device has since been defused, police said.

Police are beefing up their presence at Christmas markets across Germany.

Despite the show of calm, tensions are running high since last week when six men were arrested over an alleged plot to attack a market in the western city of Essen.

A failed Tunisian asylum seeker drove a truck into a Christmas market in Berlin in December 2016, killing 12 people and injuring another 56. The suspect, Anis Amri, fled to Italy after the December 19 attack and died in a shootout with police near Milan on December 23, 2016.

The city will then unveil a memorial to the attacks: a bronze crack inserted into the pavement and, on the steps leading to the church, the names of the victims.
