Contract negotiations reportedly on the rocks between Dave Doeren, NC State

Dave Doeren smiles

After being told no time and time again by multiple coaches, Tennessee has set it sights on NC State coach Dave Doeren, per The Raleigh News & Observer.

Although North Carolina State had been working on a new deal for the coach since earlier this season, the discussions with Tennessee likely helped expedite the process.

It was reported on Wednesday after that that Purdue coach Jeff Brohm, in his first year with the program, would be hired for the Tennessee job. Get the app and get the game.

N.C. State is 8-4 and ranked No. 24 in the College Football Playoff poll.

The two sides had hoped to work out an agreement in October, after the Wolfpack had started the season at 6-1, but couldn't come to an agreement on the length of the contract.

Should Doeren decide to stay at NC State, Tennessee is expected to pursue former Vols quarterback and current USC offensive coordinator Tee Martin or SMU head coach Chad Morris.

Doeren, according to a source with knowledge of the situation, had wanted a five-year deal, a raise that would put him in the middle of the ACC pecking order and a bigger pool of money for his assistant coaches. says N.C. State has the sixth-best recruiting class in the Atlantic Coast Conference from the Class of 2018. The 45-year-old Doeren owns a 33-30 record in five seasons at N.C. State.

Doeren had previously spoken with OR and MS about their coaching vacancies and had long talks with Tennessee about replacing Butch Jones.

In addition to Pennix, Person, McNeill and Williams, Doeren has commitments from Gabriel Gonzalez of Eastern Alamance, Joseph Boletepeli of Heritage, Malik Dunlap of Harding and Chris Dunn of North Davidson. NC State had seven All-ACC selections this season, its highest total since 2002, while Bradley Chubb was honored as ACC Defensive Player of the Year.

Doeren was given the choice on Thursday, and there was no other place he would rather be.
