All militants killed as operation ended successfully in Peshawar Agriculture Directorate: ISPR

Pakistan: 3 terrorists open fire at Agricultural Directorate near Peshawar University; journalist, security guard among injured

Local newspaper reports said four of the terrorists have also been gunned down as they fought security forces.

At least two gunmen entered the Peshawar Agriculture Training Institute disguised in the Islamic veils worn by many women in the region, the BBC reported.

An eyewitness said he and his colleagues were sleeping when the firing started Geo News reported.

The area where the incident occurred is a hub for educational institutions including the University of Peshawar.

The hostel of the directorate was officially closed on Friday as the country observes Eid Miladun Nabi.

Shehzad Akbar, medical director of Hayatabad Medical Complex, said six people died of their wounds and 18 were being treated. "I got up and within seconds everybody was running and shouting 'the Taliban have attacked, '" said a student.

Police said at least three militants opened fire at security guards near the gates of the Agriculture Training Institute, injuring one person before making their way inside and targeting student accommodation.

"We took shelter inside the bedroom and were begging the injured student not to make any sound as the terrorists might hear it and kill us".

Salahuddin Mehsud, Inspector General of Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa, said timely action by police and the Army helped in reducing the number of deaths. Aerial surveillance of the operation was also carried out whereas armoured vehicles of security forces were also present in the Directorate.

The Dawn quoted police officials, as saying that the terrorists aimed to attack the university hostel.

In a similar attack, Pakistani Taliban gunmen, in December 2014, had killed 134 children at Peshawar's Army Public School.

Violence erupted over the weekend after police and paramilitary forces launched a bungled attempt to clear a sit-in, igniting fresh demonstrations in cities across the country, including in Lahore and Karachi.
